Meet the Interns Summer 2020

by Hadean Team

Our internships offer people from a variety of educational backgrounds the opportunity to get hands-on experience in a range of aspects in the technology field, gain insight into how a startup functions and receive mentorship. Our interns are valued members of the company and learn by doing; they are responsible for owning their own projects which allows them to be challenged, contribute to the company and see the immediate effects of their efforts. We caught up with our recent interns to hear about their time at Hadean.

Erik Järte

Infrastructure Intern

What got you interested in doing an internship with Hadean?

To gain experience working in a startup, particularly the technical side.

Where are you currently in your education, and what jobs are you interested in?

I am currently studying at the KTH (Royal Institute of Technology) in Stockholm. I am seeking a job with a good team and new challenges.

What work did you do during your internship, and what is the most interesting thing you worked on whilst interning?

I have worked on porting the Aether Engine infrastructure to AWS (Amazon Web Services) so that Aether Engine can also run on AWS. I have also implemented a CI (Continuous Integration) to our repo that tests the code after every commit and every night.

What skills have you gained or improved over the course of your internship?

I have improved my ability to work in a group and know when to ask for help when there is something that I don’t know, as well as working remotely.

Why did you keep coming back to Hadean to do more internships?

The best part of Hadean is that it is always moving forward. Both the technology and the people are always developing.”

James Knight

Operations & Life Sciences Intern

What got you interested in doing an internship with Hadean?

I first became interested in doing an internship with Hadean when I read about their previous work with the Francis Crick institute on Protein-Protein Interactions. This showed me how Hadean’s powerful technology could be in Life Sciences applications. I’ve always wanted to work in Life Sciences research and so I was excited to work on applying Aether Engine to further problems in this field.

How did you get an internship placement at Hadean?

My internship placement was advertised by the Computing Department at Imperial College.

Where are you currently in your education, and what jobs are you interested in?

I am about to begin my 4th year of an MEng Mathematics and Computer Science degree at Imperial College. I am interested in working in research which applies computing methods to problems in the Life Sciences.

What work did you do during your internship, and what is the most interesting thing you worked on whilst interning?

I worked on two different research projects related to COVID-19 in my time at Hadean.

The first was modelling the transmission of the virus through populations. This was done with an academic partner at Imperial College and involved simulating interactions on geospatial social networks to aid in understanding how changing people’s movement patterns affect transmission.

The second was on modelling the spread of COVID-19 throughout the lungs. This was done with academic partners at the Francis Crick institute and involved simulating COVID-19 and the associated immune response on an idealised model of the lungs to aid in understanding the best intervention points during treatment.

The most interesting aspect of working on these two projects was figuring out how best to apply the resources made available by Hadean in order to do truly novel scientific research.

What skills have you gained or improved over the course of your internship?

During my time at Hadean, I had many opportunities to develop my skills both in programming and in scientific research. I also gained invaluable experience in working as a part of a team to bring a large project to completion. As the projects I worked on were collaborations between Hadean and external scientific partners, I also gained experience in managing the needs of different stakeholders when planning and executing tasks.

Gina Browning

Marketing Intern

What got you interested in doing an internship with Hadean?

I first heard about Hadean when they did an investment presentation at an event I went to with my school. They talked about solving world issues with distributed computing such as life sciences and climate change and it got me really interested in the company.

How did you get an internship placement at Hadean?

I initially approached them for work experience and did one week with them in 2019 where I got to learn more about the company and meet members of the team. I enjoyed my time at Hadean so much that I decided to approach them again this year and was offered a two month internship placement.

Where are you currently in your education, and what jobs are you interested in?

I’m about to start university to do a computer science degree and I am currently interested in jobs which involve design within the scope of software engineering. I especially enjoy 3D design.

What work did you do during your internship, and what is the most interesting thing you worked on whilst interning?

I worked as part of the life sciences team creating content for the website, particularly around the current work they are doing with the Francis Crick Institute and modelling the transmission of COVID-19. The most interesting thing I did was build an interactive graph which centered around Hadean’s micro and macro simulations of COVID-19.

What skills have you gained or improved over the course of your internship?

My ability to work through a complex coding problem and come up with a solution. As a result of my internship, I feel much more confident about being able to manage the level of coding difficulty which will be involved within my computer science degree.

Wanshunyu Zhang

SDK Engineering

What got you interested in doing an internship with Hadean?

Cloud and distributed computing is a very interesting topic to me and I wanted to get experience in the industry, as well as working at a startup.

How did you get an internship placement at Hadean?

I saw the email advertisement from our department at Imperial College and applied directly.

Where are you currently in your education, and what jobs are you interested in?

I am currently studying Computing at Imperial College and just finished my third year of this 4-year MEng programme. I am interested in jobs which use technology and computer science to change the way we live and benefit the world.

What work did you do during your internship, and what is the most interesting thing you worked on whilst interning?

I am working in the SDK Engineering team and have been tasked to rework the installer to provide a better user experience.

What skills have you gained or improved over the course of your internship?

It’s my first internship, so I learnt a lot about how the industry works, for example, how software development is managed, while the engineering team needs to constantly communicate with other teams to understand the requirements, then make the plan. It was also my first time gaining experience with C# and other Microsoft technologies.

We are looking to bring in more interns from a variety of educational backgrounds to work with our teams. To learn more about how to become an intern with Hadean or if you have any questions, visit our Internship Page
