Carrying the Tizard Spirit Forward: 85 Years of Allied Innovation

The Tizard Mission is a defining example of effective, strategically consequential technical collaboration. Its scientific brilliance, collegiate approach, and mission focus continue to resonate today. The Mission’s WWII origins, rooted in technical exchange between the UK, US, and Canada, demonstrate what can be achieved when technologists, innovators, and mission leaders are aligned behind a shared purpose and absolute determination.

A Model for Modern Alliance

As alliances face the most acute pressure since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the example set by the Tizard Mission remains highly relevant. Enduring partnerships depend on complete mission alignment and commitment. We are honoured to sponsor this event alongside our American and Canadian allies, and to carry forward the spirit of the Mission through our own work.

As a British software startup with a growing presence in North America, working with high-impact and high-consequence users, we are committed to applying our technology in support of our nations and the values we share.

Strengthening Allied Connectivity

The bonds we see and experience with our mission partners on both sides of the Atlantic, and the connectivity between them, remain strong. However, as Admiral McRaven in his ‘Never Fight Alone’ piece clearly reminds us, this is something that should never be taken for granted. This strength cannot be assumed or allowed to drift into complacency. As technologists, we must continue to invest the same commitment, effort and enthusiasm to sustain the legacy of the ‘Greatest Generation’, in the hope that those who served in the Tizard Mission would be as proud of what we build today as we remain proud of what they achieved.

We recognise the responsibility inherent in supporting national security users, particularly as interoperability and an ‘ecosystem approach’ have long been central to Hadean’s capability. Such capability can unlock the potential of multi-system solutions and, in keeping with the theme of international collaboration, deliver the greatest impact when working alongside partners who share our drive for mission success.

‘When we celebrate the lasting impact of the Tizard Mission, we rightly remember the technological advantage it enabled. However, I also reflect on our first SOF Truth: ‘Humans are more important than hardware.’ The brave, audacious and brilliant men and women that made up the Mission, and their collective commitment, is exceptional. I’ve had the distinct pleasure of working closely with our British and Canadian allies throughout my career in Special Operations and seeing them weave together the best of technology, cultural understanding and national security imperatives to accomplish the mission, while strengthening the alliance is nothing short of extraordinary.’ ~ Lt. Gen. (Retd) Scott Howell

‘The operational need for demonstrable dominance in understanding, decision-making and then action across Allies has never been more critical. This, and the critical edge that tech should give us to deter and, if necessary, win makes the spirit of Tizard more important than ever, and puts companies like Hadean at the forefront of collective Defence.’ ~ Air Marshal Phil C Osborn CBE RAF
