Navigating New and Upcoming Legislation with Hadean

On August 1st, we stepped into the first phase of the European Union’s new AI legislation. This act closely mirrors the stringent GDPR regulations and we recognise the need for a proactive and comprehensive approach to AI governance. Simultaneously, similar intentions to regulate AI have been voiced across party lines in the UK, underscoring the urgency for robust AI policies.

At Hadean Supercomputing, we are acutely aware of the pivotal role that Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays in driving innovation and efficiency within the industries we operate in. Here are my thoughts on what companies should think about when preparing for the coming wave of legislation in the form of what we like to call The Four Pillars of AI Governance :

1. AI Toolset Policies

It’s crucial to understand and define the AI tools in use across your company. Establish clear guidelines on the ethical and effective use of AI platforms, such as ChatGPT, by staff and developers. A blanket ban will simply drive usage underground so incorporating guidelines for people to follow will benefit you more than simply trying to stop the tide from coming in. Creating ethical and auditable standards will ensure responsible AI interactions that align with organisational values.

2. Compliance and Certification

Adhering to international regulations should be a cornerstone of any AI policy. Although AI legislation is new there are already standards like the ISO42001:2023 certification to ensure industry compliance.  Certification like this outlines the necessary steps for achieving compliance with global standards. Integrate these standards into daily operations through a meticulous implementation process to ensure systems meet the highest regulatory benchmarks.More and more clients are requesting adherence and justification of risks where not.

3. Data Protection and Infrastructure Security

Protecting data and infrastructure from external threats is paramount. With the increasing collection of data by third-party entities for their AI models, establish robust measures to safeguard assets. This maintains the integrity and confidentiality of information, protecting it from potential misuse or breaches. This will include education against new and emerging threats like deepfake video conference phishing.

4. AI Development

As innovation in AI tools continues, establishing clear and transparent development protocols is essential. Address ethical considerations, development standards, and operational guidelines to ensure AI solutions are both cutting-edge and responsible. This fosters an environment of responsible innovation and technological advancement. Being able to prove that your codebase is yours and that any specific elements have been written by AI and from where did those get generated from will give you and your clients peace of mind.

The future of AI is filled with potential, but it requires thoughtful and deliberate action to harness the benefits responsibly. As the world moves forward with new AI regulations, companies must rise to the challenge, ensuring their policies and practices are aligned with the highest standards of ethics and security. By doing so, we can foster an environment of responsible AI innovation that drives progress and maintains public trust.

Let’s embrace this opportunity to lead with integrity, setting a benchmark for excellence in AI governance that others can follow. Together, we can shape a future where AI serves as a powerful tool for positive change and sustainable growth.
