DSET Diaries: Hadean’s Dive into Defence Modelling and Simulation

Summary

Members of our innovation team joined senior UK Ministry of Defence officials and industry stakeholders at DSET as part of a Defence Analysis Modelling and Simulation (AMS) course. The event was also a great opportunity for them to interact and try out some of the cutting-edge training systems exhibited at the event and gain a broader perspective on how different innovations can be integrated and enhanced with dual-use technologies.

Last week, two members of Hadean’s innovation team, Dan Gorringe and Vilius Drumsta, had the opportunity to step away from their day-to-day tinkering to attend DSET at Bristol. They were there as part of an intensive Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course on Defence Analysis Modelling and Simulation (AMS), a comprehensive programme designed to equip participants with the foundational principles, methodologies, and emerging technologies that are revolutionising the field of Modelling and Simulation (M&S) in defence.

Advancing Our Understanding of M&S

The course offers a blend of theoretical knowledge, practical workshops, and interactive sessions, introducing the core concepts of M&S and highlighting its critical role in Defence decision-making, training, and analysis. Participants gain a solid understanding of its definitions, standards, roles, and applications, emphasising the importance of M&S in creating effective military strategies. It signals the great interest in the UK Ministry of Defence and the wider industry to accelerate learning and education about M&S and see these methods applied to enhance in-service and future capabilities.

During their time at DSET, Dan and Vilius delved into critical topics of the course, such as the methodologies underpinning M&S, focusing on the design and management of simulation models, including the development of AI models and Digital Twins for various applications across sectors. They also explored various simulation technologies, such as Live, Virtual and Constructive simulations, and their practical applications in defence. This included hands-on exercises implementing AI techniques, providing practical experience and reinforcing theoretical knowledge. The course concluded with a discussion on the future of M&S in defence, its significance, and the ethical considerations involved.

Walking the showfloor

Beyond the intensive coursework, Dan and Vilius had the chance to walk the floor at DSET, catching up with other innovative tech leaders in the space. They also had the opportunity to interact and try out some of the cutting-edge training systems exhibited at the event and gain a broader perspective on how different innovations can be integrated and enhanced with dual-use technologies to maximise their output and deliver more value to the end-user.

At Hadean, we pride ourselves on supporting the continuous development of our talented teams. Dan and Vilius’s experience at DSET and their participation in the CPD course exemplify our dedication to excellence and innovation. This commitment to professional growth allows us to deliver the best value to our customers, consistently pushing the boundaries of technological innovation and maintaining our position at the forefront of the industry.
